New Asda Superstore - Felling

The Brief:

The design supply & installation of a property protection sprinkler system within a new base build supermarket to comply with Asda’s own individual tailored sprinkler specification provided and documented by Asda’s insurers Lockton’s International.

The new build premises was already constructed when we were appointed to the project and the internal fit out was being undertaken by a separate contractor to the main building contractor meaning a very tight programme to complete the proposed works from start to completion of 8 weeks.

Our Solution:

The new sprinkler system was provided with a single water storage tank and duplicate fire pump sets (housed within a GRP pumphouse provided by Besseges) to comply with the requirements of Asda & Lockton’s Insurance along with an electrical installation comprising of monitor panels, remote alarm panels and pumphouse wiring undertaken by Besseges.

Due to the nature of the high level curved roof and the fact that the sprinkler protection and associated pipework within the main sales area had to be installed exposed and visible from the ground floor we had all the pipework professionally powder coated white, fitted white sprinklers and furthermore installed the mains pipework adjacent the main roof steels to follow the curved radius of the roof within the sprinkler ranges being located discreetly inside the roof purlins to compliment the architects design.

Within the Asda warehouse areas sprinkler protection is required to provide an extremely high level of water discharge due to the nature of the goods stored within these premises and as such the sprinkler installation on this premises was designed utilising AutoCAD and was fully hydraulically calculated utilising an approved hydraulic computer programme (FHC) to ensure that these densities were achieved which is unique to fire sprinkler organisations that are approved by the LPCB to undertake this level of work.

Besseges completed the sprinkler installation ahead of the 8 week programme deadline and our engineers were complimented on their professionalism and quality of workmanship ensuring the store was handed over to the client in line with their requirements.

The Results:

On completion of the sprinkler installation the premises have benefited fromm a full property protection sprinkler installation in full compliance with Asda’s requirements and acts as a 24hour 365 days a year automatic fire protection system which is designed to protect the school premises form possible malicious or accidental fire occurrences and is recognised by the buildings insurers as the best form of fire protection which is providing protection to the premises when the building is occupied or unoccupied and electrically monitored and linked to the fire brigade services for automatic attendance in the event of an activation.
